Switch on the Holidays: The Night Downtown Boulder Lights Up

On Sunday, November 22, 2026, downtown Boulder turns its holiday lights on all at once. The day starts with the Cookie Crawl at 11 am, rolls through performances on the 1300 block of Pearl Street all afternoon, and at 5 pm the switch flips: lights along the Pearl Street Mall, out through the Civic Area, and around the Boulder County Courthouse. It is the season opener for everything downtown does in December, and it is built for a slow, layered afternoon with a crowd of people you like.

Every fact below comes from the organizer's own pages, checked October 20, 2026. We will keep this page current as the day approaches.

The Facts As They Stand

All event facts from Downtown Boulder's official Switch on the Holidays page and its Light Up the Holidays season page, checked October 20, 2026.

The Rest of the Season

The lights are the start of a run that Downtown Boulder calls Light Up the Holidays, with events and activities throughout downtown from late November into December. Two more dates from the organizer's season page are worth marking now. St. Nick on the Bricks brings free visits with Santa to the Visitor Information Center at 1303 Pearl Street on Friday, November 27, and Saturdays November 28, December 5, and December 12, each from 11 am to 2 pm. And the season closes with the Lights of December Parade on Saturday, December 12 at 6 pm, floats and fire engines and Santa rolling through the middle of downtown.

Planning a Group Afternoon Around It

This is the rare event that gets better the more people you bring, because the day is made of small pieces that different ages enjoy at different speeds. Send the early risers down for the Cookie Crawl while the cookies last. Let the shoppers peel off into the stores. Everyone reconvenes on the 1300 block for the afternoon performances, and when the tubas finish at dusk and the courthouse lights come on at 5, there is a collective, unembarrassed gasp from the crowd, every year.

Practical notes for the planner: it is late November in Boulder, so the pleasant part of standing outside ends somewhere around 5:15. Hats, gloves, and a plan for warming up indoors afterward are not optional. The Pearl Street Mall is flat, pedestrianized brick, which makes strollers and wheelchairs easy, and the Visitor Information Center gives the youngest members of your group a warm indoor stop with Santa until 7 pm. Dinner downtown is the move if you want to let the lights linger; the walkable blocks around Pearl have enough kitchens to settle any argument about what kind of food counts as holiday food.

If your group is staying with us, the house sleeps up to fourteen in five bedrooms, about fifteen minutes up the canyon from Pearl Street. The shape of that evening writes itself: everyone out the door in the late afternoon, the lights and the courthouse and the gasp at 5, Santa for the kids, then the drive back up Sunshine Canyon Drive with a car full of sleepy, sugar-carrying passengers and a hot tub waiting in the dark.

If You Are Coming for the Lights

The Sunday before Thanksgiving is when Boulder's holiday calendar starts and when the out-of-town planning for December starts with it. If the plan is lights Sunday and a lazy Monday in the canyon before the drive home, the earlier the house is locked in, the better the weekend tends to go.
