Why a Sold-Out December Race Is Still the Hard One to Book

The organizer says this race now sells out year after year, so if you are reading this, your crew is probably already in. That makes lodging the last open question. A 7:05 first wave means alarms at five and coffee in the dark, and it means nobody wants to be navigating hotel corridors to find the person holding the safety pins. One house instead of a block of rooms gives you one address for the group chat, one kitchen for the oatmeal and banana station, and one living room where fourteen pairs of running shoes get laid out in a row the night before.

Race Morning From the Canyon

The drive down to the CU campus runs about twenty minutes, and at that hour it is a good one: headlights sweeping the canyon switchbacks, the first light going pink on the Divide, the town still glittering below when you come down out of the dark. Race-day parking is in CU lots 391, 169 and 436, paid in the lot that morning, and the organizer also runs a runner drop-off on Stadium Drive next to the buffalo statue, with signage and volunteers to point the way. Bag check is inside the Balch Fieldhouse, and so are the restrooms; there are no porta-potties on the course, so plan the last water stop accordingly.

One honest note on getting around: rideshares can reach the house, but pickups up the canyon are less reliable than drop-offs, especially early in the morning. The plan that never fails a race crew is the group's own car or a rental, driven by whoever drew the late wave.

After the Finish

Walk out of the field house with your medal and your cocoa, and the rest of the day is yours. The smart move from our canyon is the unhurried one: head back up the hill, put the finishers in the hot tub, reheat a real breakfast, and let the campus traffic drain. By early afternoon Pearl Street is fifteen minutes away, all lit for the season, and a December walk on the mall with a roasted coffee in hand is the correct way to end a race day.
