COLDERBolder 5K: Boulder's Cold-Sweat Classic Comes Back to CU

On Saturday, December 5, 2026, the COLDERBolder 5K returns to the University of Colorado campus: thirteen invitational races of runners sorted by speed, one Open Race for everyone else, a Walking Wave for the festive strollers, and a finish line inside the field house where the heat and the holiday spirit hit you at the same time. If you are organizing a running crew for the first weekend of December, here is the working brief.

Every fact below comes from the race organizer's own site, checked October 6, 2026. We will keep this page current as race day approaches.

The Facts As They Stand

All race facts from the organizer's own pages: bolderboulder.com and the COLDERBolder 2026 FAQs, checked October 6, 2026; registration status rechecked October 22, 2026.

Why the Waves Matter for Your Group

The COLDERBolder has run since 2003 as the sister race to the BOLDERBoulder, and its whole idea is that everyone gets a shot. The invitational races put people who finished within about two minutes of each other into the same race, so whoever wins each one has genuinely won something. The top three in each race take home Cold Medals. The trade for a group: unless your crew all qualified into the same wave, you will not all run together. The organizer's own answer for friends and families is the Open Race, which places everyone together regardless of pace.

Two things worth knowing before you promise anyone a morning. Runners must start in their assigned race, and bibs are personal: no transferring, no handing yours to a faster cousin. And the course rules are firm about gear: no pets, no strollers or baby joggers, no skateboards or skates, and no costumes that extend beyond the body, which is a real loss for a December dress-up crowd.

Morning-of Logistics

The early starts are the thing to plan around. Race-day packet pickup opens at 6:00 AM in the Balch Fieldhouse, near the start line, and Race 1 goes off at 7:05. Anyone who picked a partner location for packet pickup has to collect theirs by Friday, December 4. Race-day parking is in CU lots 391, 169 and 436, paid on the day, and the organizer also runs a free runner drop-off on Stadium Drive next to the buffalo statue, with signage and volunteers on the day. There is an aid station at mile 2, and restrooms are inside the field house, since there are no porta-potties on the course.

Planning the Weekend Around It

A December race weekend in Boulder has a shape: an early night before, a cold bright start with your breath hanging in the air on the CU campus, burritos and cocoa in the field house by mid-morning, and a slow afternoon with the whole group back at the house. Sunshine Canyon Retreat sleeps up to fourteen above town, about a twenty minute drive down the canyon to campus, with a hot tub that has no equal in the state for post-race legs, in our completely unbiased opinion. Early December in the canyon is quiet, gold light on the snow, and the best sunsets of the year over the Divide. For the lodging side of the weekend, we wrote a separate piece: Where to Stay for the COLDERBolder 5K.
